Vimeo is a free, fast-growing video sharing site that is simple to use. While its audience size will most likely never reach that of YouTube, Vimeo was designed with content creators in mind and allows excellent control over the display and placement of your videos elsewhere online.

GETTING STARTED

Signing up for Vimeo is very easy and requires an email address. If you have already created a dedicated Google account for your Youtube channel for the purpose of managing your online video, it may be a good idea to use this same email address to keep things neat.

First, go to www.vimeo.com and click "Join" at the top of the page.

You'll then see this screen, asking for your name, email and

password. Fill them in, follow the prompts and you'll have

your Vimeo account!

UPLOADING VIDEO

Uploading a video is also very easy. At the top right of the screen in Vimeo there is an

"Upload" button.

When you click this button, you'll be taken to the upload interface. There you can either

choose a video to upload using a file browser, or you can simply drag the file over the

screen and drop it in. Once done, click "Upload" and the process will begin.

As the video is uploading, you can fill in the details about the video and customize its settings. The settings options and generally what they cover are:

  • Basic
Title, description and tags. You can also select the language of your video.

  • Privacy
Control exactly where and who can watch, comment and download your video.

  • Collections
If you have a lot of video content, you can organize it into special pages that have custom URLs and design called "Channels". WIth a PRO (paid) Vimeo account, you can create "Portfolios" which have even greater customization options.

Here is an example of a Richter Channel for live shoot video:

  • Embed
Here you can customize the appearance of your video when it is embedded somewhere else, including what buttons show up, etc. as well as some of the coloring used in the player. While the Vimeo player looks nice to begin with, this can be a great option if you're looking to create a look that fits with your brand.

  • Advanced
Here you can add captions and subtitles as needed, add related photos to the video page and even select a custom URL for your video. This last is obviously a very useful tool as it takes a random Vimeo "numbers" link and makes an easy to remember URL. For example, www.vimeo.com/124554862 could be changed to www.vimeo.com/username/customtitle.

Please note, however, that these custom URLs are redirects only and as such have no SEO value in themselves. They are simply for branding and ease of use for us humans.

Once the upload is complete and your settings are to your liking, the video will process (this can take a while depending on the size of your video) and you will then be able to start sharing!

SHARING VIDEO

Vimeo makes sharing your video very easy. Right on the player of almost every video there is a "Share" button that looks like a paper airplane.

When you click the Share button, you will see a box appear for sharing a link to your video on

various social media sites, sending it via email, or embedding your video on another site using

the provided code. Between these three options, you can share your video anywhere you like.

If you are embedding your video, click the "Show options" button to reveal customization options for your embedded video, including size, accent color in the player and how it will play when embedded.

The final code will look something like this:

<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/85477126?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="500" height="281" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe> <p><a href="https://vimeo.com/85477126">Richter10.2 Video #1 - What We Offer</a> from <a href="https://vimeo.com/richter10point2">Richter10.2 Media Group</a> on <a href="https://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
